ANA GALLARDO - In residency

Ana Gallardo is an Argentine artist currently living and working in Mexico City. Her work addresses different planes of violence and currently focuses on the violence of aging. She is a political artist who questions the orthodox meanings of that category in contemporary art. Her production is manifested in various media, from drawing and painting to video, text and performance, and explores themes such as family, work, old age and violence against women. Gallardo seeks answers to questions such as how do we live with these emotions, with this body, with this age, and engages with other people to shape a friendship and a process of work that results in open and challenging pieces.

From her work, the artist will carry out a process of accompaniment with the caregivers of Casa Cuna La Paz, delving into the theme of old age as a natural process of life. Returning to her "Pedimento" project, the artist focuses on a Mexican ritual that involves making a request in clay to the Virgin in a shrine on the road to Oaxaca. The statuettes are left in the open air to fall apart in the rain and transport the people's wish to the earth. At the Venice Biennale, Gallardo invited the public to make objects in clay and make wishes related to old age, especially in the context of women prisoners for life in the women's prison. Gallardo's work seeks to make visible the situation of old age and the violence that aging represents, especially for women who experience rapid changes in their bodies.

OBJECTIVES OF THE RESIDENCY

  • To reflect on the aging process and its implications in today's society.

  • To form a bond with the community of caregivers of Casa Cuna La Paz.
